Asian Elephant Behavior

Asian elephants live on average for 60 years in the wild and 80 in captivity.

Females are always found in family groups consisting of mothers, daughters, sisters and immature males. They have a matriarchal society, the group is led by the oldest female. Adult males usually remain solitary. They fight over females during the breeding season.

These elephants consume plants including grasses, fruits, vegetables, leaves, and bark which it gathers with its long trunk. They eat 10% of their body weight each day. Adults eat between 170-200 kilograms of food per day.

Females with calves are at all times dangerous to approach, but in general this is a timid, docile animal.
