Butterflies go through complete metamorphosis: egg - larva (caterpillar) - pupa - adult butterfly. Eggs are usually laid on plants. The egg stage lasts a few weeks. Caterpillars are the larvae of butterflies. These are eating machines, feeding on leaves. The caterpillar stage lasts from one week to two months. The pupa stage lasts from a few days to many months.
