Chinchilla Behavior

Chinchillas are social and very active animals. They like companionship and can be very docile if kept as pets. Chinchillas live together in herds in the wild. They live in colonies of more than 100 individuals. Wild chinchillas are nocturnal animals. They sleep in daytime and feed at night. Chinchillas love being clean, love to run and explore their environments. When frightened, chinchillas will shed hair. In the wild, chinchillas eat grasses, roots, bark, leaves, and fruits. Chinchillas communicate by a variety of vocalizations, including chirps, squeaks, and barks. In the wild, their main predators include birds of prey, skunks, felines, and snakes.
