Dragonfly Information

A dragonfly is an insect belonging to the order Odonata. It has large eyes, two pairs of wings, and an elongated body. Dragonflies live around lakes, ponds, and streams because their larvae are aquatic. Dragonflies are found worldwide and there are more than 5,000 described species. The earliest dragonflies appeared over 300 million years ago. The largest dragonfly fossil had a wingspan of 29.5 inches. Today, the Giant Petaltail (Petalura ingentissima) is the world's largest dragonfly, with a wingspan of about 6.3 inches.
