Goldfinches are primarily monogamous birds. For the American goldfinch mating occurs from late July through early September. The female lays 3-7 light blue eggs. Eggs are incubated for 12-14 days. The young will leave the nest after 11-15 days from hatching. The European goldfinch lays 4-6 bluish-white eggs. Eggs hatch within two weeks.
