The goldfish (Carassius auratus) is the most commonly kept aquarium fish and water garden fish. The goldfish originated in China and it is the earliest fish to be domesticated by humans. There are many breeds of goldfish, the most popular one being the common goldfish. Other breeds include Commet goldfish, Celestial goldfish, Fantail Goldfish, Oranda goldfish, and Ranchu goldfish. Adult goldfish range in size from 4 inches to 18 inches. Goldfish are considered the most beautiful species of fish kept as pets. They are very friendly and once tamed, goldfish can be fed by hand. The first goldfish were bred in the United States in 1878.
