Hyena Behavior

Hyenas are highly intelligent animals. Hyenas communicate by specific calls, postures and signals. Spotted hyenas live in large groups called clans. The clans are centered around females, who are dominant over the males. The aardwolf is a solitary animal.

Hyenas are hunters and scavengers, they have extremely powerful jaws and sharp teeth (except for the aardwolf). Hyenas eat wildebeest (gnu), zebra, gazelle, buffalo, topi, eggs, insects, and fruits. The aardwolf is a specialised feeder of termites. Hyenas can go for several days without water.
