Porcupine Information

The porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) is a large rodent with sharp quills covering its body. This animal can be found in the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa. Porcupines are the fourth largest rodent, after the capybara, mara, and beaver. Adult porcupines are between 25 and 40 inches long and weigh up to 40 pounds. There are 23 porcupine species in the world. They are separated into two main groups: Old World porcupines (11 species found in Europe, Africa, India) and New World porcupines (12 species found in North and South America). The New World porcupines are arboreal, while Old World porcupines are terrestrial.
