Shorebird Reproduction

American avocets lay 3-4 eggs. Both parents incubate the eggs. After hatching, the young are able to swim and feed themselves. Both long-billed curlew parents incubate the eggs. They are both aggressive, defending their nests and young. For the American black oystercatcher, the incubation period takes 26-28 days. For rock sandpipers (photo) incubation takes 20 days.
