Squirrel Reproduction

Squirrels start mating when they are 1 year old. Baby squirrels are called kittens. The period of gestation varies from 33 days (smaller species) up to 60 days (larger species). The female squirrel has 2 to 5 kittens, twice per year, in the spring and the end of the summer. A baby squirrel weighs approximately one ounce at birth, has no hair or teeth and is blind for the first 6 to 8 weeks.
